Old Ma and Old Pa Anderson have raised their lovely granddaughter Lizzie as their own child. But then one day Lizzie disappears without a trace. And their lives are changed forever. They would move heaven and earth to find her, but they are a black family living in Mississippi - in 1950's -where the law of whites rules, and where the life of a black man has no value. They struggle for justice, but it is futile. Then, when Old Ma dies unexpectedly, Old Pa has nothing left to lose. Before his departure from this world, Old Pa wants to accomplish one thing: to face down the white man and force him to reveal the dark secret surrounding the disappearance of his Lizzie. He embarks on a search of no return - for Lizzie, for Old Ma, and for his dignity as a black man
