Summary
According to the Foundation for Suicide Prevention in 2021, suicide is still the 10th leading cause of death in the United States. On average there are over 130 suicides per day. Across the country, it is the third leading cause of death for young people ages 15-24. In my home state of New Mexico, it is the leading cause of death for youth aged 17-24. he Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry has declared that the coronavirus pandemic has exacerbated the situation.Studies suggest the great majority of those who took their lives su{uFB00}ered from a diagnosable mental illness, and that many of them received no treatment or inadequate treatment. Mental illness will a{uFB00}ect one in {uFB01}ve people at some point in their lifetime. Ryan su{uFB00}ered from a mental illness, that neither he nor his family understood. Understanding came too late for us all, and he took his life in 2006 at the age of 24. The scar across our hearts still opens, reminding us that learning to live without him is the work of a lifetime. We are forced to face what cannot be changed, and to trust the Creator for what we cannot now see. The act of writing became for me, a spiritual journey to probe the promise of beauty within the darkness, to seek understanding in mystery, and to believe once again in life after death
