- Summary
- In the dead-end Canadian town of Bleak Landing, Bridget O'Sullivan lives in a ramshackle house and dreams of another life, even as the Great Depression rages. Routinely beaten by her father and bullied by schoolmate Victor Harrison, she flees to Winnipeg, lands a job at a garment factory, and begins anew. When her father dies Bridget returns home to claim her inheritance. With no identification, the only one in town who recognizes her and can help her prove her claim is Victor.
